SOARING BETWEEN PASTORS
The Role of an Interim Pastor in the African American Church
An Interim Pastor is a spiritually grounded leader appointed to serve a congregation during the transitional period between permanent pastors. Their role is not merely to “fill in” or hold the pulpit, but to offer intentional guidance, stability, and care during a critical time of reflection and renewal.
In the African American church— where tradition, trust, and community are deeply woven—this role carries even greater significance. The interim pastor becomes a bridge between what was and what is to come. They help the church navigate grief, address unresolved issues, recenter its mission, and prepare both spiritually and structurally for new leadership.
The Interim Pastor serves as a shepherd for a season, bringing healing, clarity, and momentum. Their presence ensures that the congregation is not just waiting idly, but actively preparing—ready to receive the next pastor with unity, direction, and renewed purpose.
